BayWa r.e. has launched its third office in the UK in Edinburgh, marking the company's continued expansion in the market.

The company’s services and projects businesses will operate from the new office, which was officially opened in a ceremony on 5 December.

Oliver Niedhöfer, managing director of BayWa r.e. Operation Services Limited, said: “The setup in our new Edinburgh office will help us to drive forward strategic topics such as the digitalisation of solar and wind services and the exploration of new business models.

“After a very successful 2019 we are following our path of becoming the leading renewable energy service provider in the UK.”

The expansion follows a strong year for the company, including receiving certification for its service business after meeting ISO standards and the start of construction on the first subsidy free wind farm in the UK in Inverclyde. BayWa r.e. now has a total capacity of more than 500MW of constructed wind and solar projects in the UK.

Since entering the UK market in 2017, it has amassed 2GW in its solar and wind management portfolio.

Gordon MacDougall, who was appointed as managing director of BayWa r.e. UK in 2018 to help the company take advantage of the “tremendous opportunity” in the UK said:

“2019 has been marked with many successes in our journey to help the UK meet its green energy goals. As part of our commitment to grow UK renewable capacity we’ve expanded our scope with the acquisition of Forsa Energy earlier this year. By 2020 we expect to have eight more wind turbines operational.”

BayWa r.e. has signed a number of strategic partnerships to help enable its expansion, including providing O&M services for 13 of Octopus Renewables' sites with an operational capacity of 61.1MW, as well as contracts with Magnetar Solar, Metka EGN and Good Energy. In 2018, it also acquired Beacon Consultancy.

Stuart Beattie, managing director of BayWa r.e. Operation Services Limited, added: “Since 2017 when we began our renewable energy service in the UK, the business has gone from strength to strength through organic growth and strategic acquisitions with Becon and partnerships with global asset manager MEAG and asset owner Octopus Investments.

“We are proud to deliver professional services to our clients for more than 2 GW of solar and wind projects in the UK.”
