St Nicholas’ Chapel in King’s Lynn has received a rooftop solar installation as part of a £2.7 million regeneration programme.
The system, which comprises 92 separate PV panels, is believed to be a first for a Grade I listed building where the panels are visible from the ground.
The church secured financial aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund in order pay for an extensive redevelopment programme, however the solar installation has also been supported by a grant from the ScottishPower Green Energy Trust.
The church is to use energy generated from the installation to help offset its own energy use, while income from the feed-in tariff will be used to help secure the chapel’s long-term viability.
The installation is a first for The Churches Conservation Trust and Sarah Robinson, director of conservation at the charity, said it was “delighted” with the retrofit of green technology.
“The cells will help us better manage site running costs and act as an exemplar for other community groups wishing to undertake similar projects,” she said.
