Moixa is to take its battery storage technology to Ireland as part of a new virtual power plant (VPP) in partnership with Irish supplier Energia.

The battery storage company is to aggregate solar, battery storage and electric vehicles into a 120kWh VPP that is set to provide the Irish transmission system operator, Eirgrid, with frequency response services.

Participants in the project will receive a 4.8kWh Moixa smart battery, launched in 2018 as its largest battery, as well as a rooftop solar system, coming in at €7,400. An optional EV charge point will also be offered, with grants available.

The two companies are hoping the project will demonstrate how home batteries, solar and EVs can deliver flexibility to the grid.

Gary Ryan, managing director of Energia Customer Solutions at Energia, said the project will show how homes can become “mini-power stations” that generate, store and supply electricity, which will unlock cost and carbon savings for both consumers and the network.

Moixa’s GridShare software will embed artificial intelligence in the batteries to enable them to react to signals such as pricing and constraints. The software will also learn energy consumption patterns and develop tailored EV charging plans for each household to deliver cost and carbon savings.

Moixa launched what it described as a ‘revolutionary’ solution that paired home solar batteries and EV charging in collaboration with EO Charging in August.

This came after a fresh investment from Honda earlier in the year to support Moixa's plans for expansion and development.

It has also been active in the VPP space, with its GridShare software aggregating a VPP made up of renewables, storage and electric vehicles as part of the Smart Local Energy System project.
