In search of a reliable source of electricity for her remotely situated stable block, Lorraine Bone turned to solar to help solve her problems.

Fed up with running a diesel generator that proved both noisy and costly, Lorraine had to turn to an off-grid system after putting in mains electricity proved prohibitively expensive.

After carrying out a site survey, solar installer Puragen suggested the Antaris eKiss 4 Off-Grid system as it suited her needs for providing remote power.

In order to power the system, nine poly-crystalline solar panels were fitted to Renusol ground-mounted consoles in one of the small fields next to the stable block. These consoles angle the panels at 25 degrees and are made of 100% chlorine-free polyethylene. Each one is then filled with hard-core to ensure stability. The batteries were housed in a battery box outside of the stable block.

Puragen fitted each stable with low energy cool white strip lights as well as four LED spot lights to light the courtyard and wash-down area. A control box was also installed in the kitchen as well as some new 3 pin sockets to run her fridge freezer and DC television which all draw power from 10 x 12v (75Ah) batteries.

The system will generate 6.85p/kWh from the feed-in tariff, helping off-set the cost of the system by over £2,000.

Commenting on the install, John Scott from Puragen said: “We are delighted with the outcome of this installation. Our customer, Lorraine, now has a well-lit stable block and is able to run other appliances without the expense of tying to the grid.”
