The Solar Power Portal Awards 2017 is now just a matter of weeks away and the shortlisted entrants have all been publicised.

Nearly 60 nominations have been shortlisted across the 12 public categories, the winners from which will be announced during the gala dinner ceremony at the Hilton Metropole Birmingham on Wednesday 4 October 2017.

The occasion, always one of the highlights of the UK renewables industry’s calendar, will this year be hosted by TV personality and renowned renewables advocate Robert Llewellyn.

As we countdown to the ceremony, Solar Power Portal is to shine the spotlight on this year’s shortlisted nominations, starting with the Energy Efficiency and Corporate Social Responsibility Programme.

The shortlisted entries are;

  • Aldi UK Nationwide Solar
  • ICHNT Energy Efficiency Programme
  • London Metropolitan University
  • Spring Bank Farm
  • Wellacre Academy Sustainable Energy Education Project

While Aldi has looked to curry favour with UK consumers, it has also established itself as a progressive adopter of rooftop solar. The supermarket has set itself the target of reducing its carbon footprint by 30% relative to 2012 levels.

It has since installed solar on nearly 250 of its UK outlets and distribution centres, with a total combined capacity of 12.4MW. It expects to continue this by installing as many as 82 new solar arrays – with a combined capacity of 4.1MW – over the course of 2017.

But will that be enough to set it aside from the rest of the pack in what is a very competitive field this year? Will its impressive solar programme be enough to win it the judges’ votes ahead of the NHS or London Metropolitan University? All will be revealed on 4 October 2017.
