The Solar Power Portal Awards 2017 is now just a matter of weeks away and the shortlisted entrants have all been publicised.

Nearly 60 nominations have been shortlisted across the 12 public categories, the winners from which will be announced during the gala dinner ceremony at the Hilton Metropole Birmingham on Wednesday 4 October 2017.

The occasion, always one of the highlights of the UK solar calendar, will this year be hosted by TV personality and renowned renewables advocate Robert Llewellyn.

As we countdown to the ceremony, Solar Power Portal is to shine the spotlight on this year’s shortlisted nominations, starting with the Residential, Commercial and Industrial-scale Storage Project of the Year.

The shortlisted entries are;

  • Broom Court Care Home – Blackwood Group, Emtec Energy and Scene Connect
  • Domestic Energy Storage & Control – UK Power Networks
  • South Mimms Project – Open Energi
  • Wendron Cricket Club – GreenGenUk

Open Energi arranged the installation of 250kW/500kWh Tesla Powerpack system at South Mimms Welcome Break Services to help with the installation of a number of Tesla Superchargers. The electric vehicle specialist wanted to bolster its infrastructure network, but a supply capacity issue prevented additional Superchargers from being installed at the site.

The deployment of the battery helped alleviate that issue, and now as many as 12 cars can charge at once. Meanwhile, the system has also enabled the provision of 500kW of dynamic frequency response to National Grid, aiding the creation of a more flexible network.

So will this year’s Residential, Commercial and Industrial-scale Storage Project of the Year award go to Open Energi and its South Mimms project, or will one of the other esteemed installations clinch the trophy on the night? All will be revealed on 4 October 2017.
