Last month, Solar Power Portal revealed the shortlists for this year’s Solar Power Portal and Clean Energy Awards, sponsored by Trina Solar.
More than 60 projects have been shortlisted across 12 categories ahead of what promises to be a glittering occasion at Birmingham NEC’s Hilton Metropole, hosted by stand up comedian Jimmy Carr.
In the latest article of a series of shortlist spotlight features, here are the nominees for 2016’s Residential Energy Storage award.
- Sunamp – Eastheat
- WPD/Bristol City Council – Sola Bristol
- East Green Energy Limited – Retrofit AC Coupled Tesla Powerwall
- Energy Projects Plus – Battery Storage in Cheshire
- Powervault – Using second life batteries from electric vehicles
SoLa Bristol installed solar PV, 4.8kWH batteries and 24vDC lighting in 26 Bristol homes, and linked them with the local distribution network. It was the first residential storage project of its kind in the UK, combining technological and academic innovation in solar energy with an approach to citizen engagement that valued and supported users.
During its four-year pilot, SoLa Bristol tested and evaluated the impact of energy storage on both homes and the network. One participant saved up to £30 per week and received a cheque for over £180 when her stored energy was sold back to the energy network.
Over the course of the four-year programme, many residents in an area affected by fuel poverty have saved money and energy, electricity has been exported to the grid and valuable learning has been gathered for future initiatives.
