A civic solar farm, thought to be the first to be built in Lincolnshire and only the second of its kind in the UK, is being planned by West Lindsey District Council.
Electricity generated at the proposed facility would provide income to the council which would help make up the shortfall in government funding cuts. The council hopes this will go some way toward staving off the need to increase council tax.
Details of the proposed civic solar farm, its size or possible technical specifications, have not yet been revealed and a full public consultation has been promised by the council.
The leader of West Lindsey District Council, councillor Jeff Summers, said that the it needed to be bold and invest in renewable technology to reaffirm commitment to a green agenda and lower the council’s carbon footprint as well as helping the local economy.
The council has announced the idea as part of a wider green energy drive. A number of possible sites have been proposed for the power plant, away from residential or agricultural land currently in use.
The proposal is to be considered by West Lindsey District Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, which will hold its next meeting on 5 September, according to the council’s committee timetable.
