Across the globe, solar and renewable energy initiatives and investments are at record levels. From huge multinationals like Apple to local public bodies, organisations have realised the long-term potential of solar. But even with this growth, manufacturers have a huge responsibility to increase the uptake of solar through cost effective, efficient design and continued innovation.
So what is the next innovation? Today consumers want robustness and efficiency while keeping costs consistent. The answer to this, is of course BiFacial technology.
When looking at panel design, the majority of solar panels are flat, with photovoltaic cells on one side. However, research has found that by raising the panel, we can make use of our reflective surfaces for better yields. In fact, above a reflective surface with a tilt angle of 30°, the LG NeON2 BiFacial is able to produce over 9% more energy than a module in the conventional setup.
The BiFacial design utilises the whole panel – back and front – to make the most of light conditions. The correct setup will produce more yield with fewer modules in a specific area.
The LG NeON 2 BiFacial is based on the well-known high-performance module, the LG NeON 2. The 60 highly efficient, mono-crystalline cells on the front side of the module create a basic power of 300Wp. When combined with the BiFacial cells, the power increases (under optimal conditions) to 375Wp.
The new module has also taken strides in robustness and durability. Thanks to the newly designed frame, the LG NeON 2 BiFacial can endure a front load of up to 6,000 Pa and a rear load of up to 5,400 Pa. The transparent film used within the design means LG NeON 2 BiFacial modules weigh only 17kg. This weight reduction decreases the possibilities of fracture, reducing risks for installation technicians while also making the module suitable for flat and pitched roofs.
Demands on the solar market have never been higher. Installers are expecting the same level of output, subsidies are taken away and budgets are slashed. The only way a true solar and renewable revolution can be delivered is through constant progression and innovation.
