Battery intelligence firm Brill Power has announced the launch of what it claims is the world’s first battery management as a service (BmaaS) offering.

Under the system, Brill Power clients will be able to access the combined power of the BrillCore hardware, BrillOS firmware and BrillAnalytics could-based analytics software, allowing for more advanced monitoring and more efficient use of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Customers will pay a recurring monthly fee to access BrillAnalytics, with BrillPower supporting them through the process of commissioning and operating their BESS assets. Once the batteries have begun operation, asset operators can view real-time performance data, including insights into degradation rates of modules, racks and systems, and an estimated remaining useful life of the asset. Brill Power’s data science team will also provide remote monitoring and diagnostics services to minimise operations and maintenance costs and system downtime, as well as recommendations on how to optimise battery performance through operation to maximise return on investment. Additionally, the team will be able to provide predictive failure insights developed using a combination of AI and in-house team experience.

As part of the service, clients will have access to Brill Power’s latest power conversion product, BESA BP6X1. Brill Power claims that this product’s active loading technology is able to extend battery life by up to 27%, increase utilization by up to 71%, and can boost safety and uptime by continuously balancing modules.

The BmaaS programme will be offered on all current and future Brill Power products on three year, five year, and custom length contracts, and continuous over-the-air firmware updates will be provided to ensure the system remains accurate and functioning at its best.

UK BESS market on the rise, software solutions increasingly important

With the UK BESS market seeing growth, it is understandable that BESS developers and asset managers will be looking to more innovative software solutions to ensure they get the most out of their BESS assets.

A recent report by market analytics platform Modo Energy revealed that December 2024 saw the highest BESS revenues in Great Britain since January 2023, with revenues reaching £84,000/MW/year in December. This is more than double the average revenue seen in January of 2024, when average revenue sat at £36,000/MW/year. This follows analysis from June 2024 which saw market analytics firm Ernst & Young rank the UK BESS market as the third strongest in the world, beaten only by the US and mainland China.

As such, interest in asset management software services is on the rise, with several significant deals taking place in 2024. In September, battery asset owner Varco Energy agreed an asset management deal with Arenko, which will see Arenko’s Nimbus Performance software rolled out across Varco Energy’s three long duration storage projects when they come online.

Less than a month later, Arenko signed another major software deal, this time with Gore Street Energy Storage Fund. In a Solar Power Portal exclusive, the companies revealed that Arenko’s Nimbus software will be integrated into 18 grid-scale battery energy storage projects with a combined capacity of just under 500MW in the coming months.

AI, which forms part of Brill Power’s new BmaaS offering, is also becoming increasingly integrated into BESS asset management. In April 2024, Gore Street Energy Storage Fund revealed that it had deployed cloud-based data analytics software driven by AI at two of its projects in order to manage risk and get better insurance terms on projects in its portfolio.
