British Gas, in partnership with River Cottage, has today launched the energyshare tariff, which will both promote renewable energy projects and provide households with the opportunity to have a say in where their energy comes from. By bringing its customers together both online and in person, the initiative will help community renewable energy projects already in progress as well as inspiring others to take the plunge.
The energyshare tariff will provide a range of benefits to its customers, including the opportunity to utilize renewable energy at home. As part of the new tariff, British Gas will match the electricity the energyshare customers use with electricity from British renewable sources at the same price as its Standard tariff. The energy supplier has also pledged to donate £10 a year for every tariff member to the energyshare fund in order to support renewable energy community projects. Members of the tariff will be able to vote on where and how this money is spent.
Over 400 community projects have already applied for the first round of energyshare funding, where up to £500,000 is up for grabs. Through the energyshare tariff initiative, British Gas is aiming to generate £15 million of support, which will be available for community energy projects over the next five years.
Members of the tariff will also get help to save energy and money in their homes with a choice of free energy efficiency gadgets such as eco-kettles, energy monitors and radiator panels.
