Plans to install a 10kWp solar array on the roof of Harborough Methodist Church have been submitted to Harborough District Council for approval.

The church aims to install a total of 40, 250-watt panels on the rear south-facing roof of its building in what would be one of the largest arrays in the town centre.

Peter Davies, a Member of the church’s Management Committee and who submitted the plan to the council, told the Harborough Mail: “As well as being good for the environment, it will save us money in the long-term.”

It is estimated that the £30,000 scheme will help save the church around £1,500 a year in energy costs. The idea to install solar panels was first suggested after a church member donated money to the church.

“What was first proposed was a small scheme but we thought we would go for it with some gusto,” Mr Davies said.

The Management Committee are hoping the panels could be in place before the end of the year.
