Engineering firm, Spencer Group, has installed solar panels on its new headquarters – the Humber Quays building in Hull.

The £70,000 solar photovoltaic array has been installed by Spencer Solar and is intended to work towards the group’s environmental aspirations.

Julie Worman, who oversees Spencer's sustainability activities, said: “The environmentally-friendly improvements we have made at One Humber Quays, including harnessing solar power, will make our headquarters significantly more energy efficient. As a business with major renewable energy activities, we are acutely aware of the need for our operations to have sustainability at their heart.”

The building’s exposed rooftop provided a unique challenge to Spencer Solar, who devised an innovative solution to install the solar array. Spencer Solar secured solar modules to free-standing steel under construction affixed to paving slabs to act as ballast. A crane was then used to lift the modules and framework onto the roof.

Colin Marshall, Project Manager at Spencer Solar said: “This is not the first time we have installed solar panels on our buildings – last year we placed a system on our warehouse in Hull next to the Energy Works site, and recently upgraded our system at our offices in Barrow, North Lincolnshire.

Marshall concluded: “This will help our teams in One Humber Quays operate in a much more sustainable way and improve our day-to-day efficiencies.”
