Elements Green has signed a deal with Mitie-owned G2 Energy to design and build its 360MW/720MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nottinghamshire.

Under the £71.5 million deal, G2 will also be responsible for the associated 400kV grid connection infrastructure. The project is located near Staythorpe National Grid substation, northwest of Newark-on-Trent.

Elements Green secured planning permission for the project in June last year and the target date for the project to be operational is 2026. Work will commence onsite this month and construction is expected to create about 60 jobs.

G2 Energy moved into full BESS wrapped EPC services under Mitie when it was acquired in 2023. As covered on Energy-Storage.News last year, Mitie took G2 Energy on because decarbonising buildings is a growing part of its huge facilities management division with many large commercial & industrial (C&I) clients having specific plans for the next 3-5 years.

Elements Green CEO Rasmus Friis called the “landmark” partnership a major step forward in delivering the project, which is one of the largest in Europe.

Kelvin Ruck, managing director of Mitie Power & Grid, said the companies have been collaborating over the last few months to optimise the design and delivery schedule of the project. Ruck, along with G2 COO Nigel Hughes and 50 other employees, moved to Mitie when it took G2 on.

Ruck spoke to Energy-Storage.News about the acquisition at the Energy Storage Summit EU last year, available to read here.

Elements Green is also in the process of obtaining a development consent order (DCO) for the 800MW Great North Road Solar and Biodiversity Park in Nottinghamshire. The second phase of statutory consultation for the development, which will also feature battery storage, closed earlier this week.
