Nominations for 2015’s Solar Power Portal Awards are currently open. Returning for its third year, the Solar Power Portal Awards will take place on 13 October, the first evening of the sixth Solar Energy UK exhibition in Birmingham.

In the run up to the 29 June nominations deadline, Solar Power Portal is taking a closer look at each of this year’s categories.

Community benefit

The community benefit award will look at the biggest impact on a community be from a community group itself or the efforts of a private sector player to spread the rewards of their work to the wider locality.

Changes in the policy landscape have placed a much greater emphasis on the community aspect of a renewable installation. The government's move to allow solar developers to share connections with community projects has placed a greater commercial emphasis on the sector, as the market eyes up the larger 10MW schemes. But the Solar Power Portal judges will be looking for a true community champion, taking into account all aspects of the development and its impact on all project stakeholders.

Last year's winners

Coalfields community sustainable energy programme, CRT Renewable Energy

Judges agreed that the winning entry was a wonderful example of the power of solar as we move towards decentralised generation – an entry that addressed a wide section of society in its bid to helping communities.
