GridBeyond and electrification technology company ABB have ‘deepened’ their strategic partnership to deliver ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service offering.
ABB made a strategic investment into GridBeyond, which provides intelligent energy management solutions, in 2024, launching the partnership between the two companies. Together, they offer a fully managed energy storage service to commercial and industrial (C&I) customers worldwide.
GridBeyond’s flagship product is managed battery-as-a-Service (MBaaS), which enables remote management, energy price forecasting, trade optimisation, service stacking, trade submissions and device control.
The new BESS-as-a-Service offer includes all hardware, software and lifecycle support, with ABB managing deployment, maintenance and optimisation with zero CapEx. It is designed to be technology-agnostic so that businesses can use the service without being tied to a single system.
To deliver the new solution, GridBeyond and ABB will also collaborate with Tallarna, a climate tech and finance platform, which will provide its data analytics software, insurance solutions, and financing expertise to de-risk battery energy storage system (BESS) projects and provide visibility into the financial benefits of these initiatives.
GridBeyond’s platform will provide energy price forecasting to enable strategic charging and discharging, and its AI capabilities will optimise the performance of ABB’s BESS-as-a-Service assets. This will support real-time energy optimisation, demand-side response participation, and access to new revenue streams in global energy markets.
ABB is currently conducting feasibility assessments with prospective customers to ensure immediate financial benefits before the deployment of BESS-as-a-Service.
Michael Phelan, GridBeyond’s CEO, said that to take advantage of the benefits that BESS can provide, “it is crucial to analyse the projects’ feasibility, the financial implications, and have an accurate AI platform that can maximise batteries’ potential.”
In November last year, GridBeyond and Triodos Energy Transition Europe Fund expanded their joint venture, GridBeyond Storage, with an investment commitment of over £9 million from Triodos. More recently, GridBeyond was selected by AMPYR Solar Europe (ASE) to manage its 7.5MW BESS, co-located with the 400MWp Northwold solar PV development.
