Renewable technology firm Shawton Energy has taken on a 8.6MW Welsh solar project from One Planet.

The unnamed project, set to be located in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, was granted planning permission last year and now is at the ready-to-build stage of development. Having taken over the project from renewable energy developer One Planet Developments, Shawton Energy will construct and operate the 14,000-panel solar PV power plant going forward.

An exact date for the commencement of construction has not yet been revealed, but Shawton Energy stated it will begin “shortly”, and the first energy generation from the solar PV power plant is expected before the end of 2025.

“The acquisition of this ready-to-build asset from One Planet is a major milestone for Shawton Energy, as we continue to support British businesses in meeting their sustainability targets whilst reducing their energy costs,” said Jamie Shaw, CEO at Shawton Energy.

James Stoney, business development director at One Planet Developments, added: “One Planet is very pleased to have worked with Shawton Energy on this fantastic project. Having developed the site from scratch through to ready-to-build stage, we look forward to seeing Shawton Energy build, own and operate it.”

Shawton Energy diversifies

In the past, Shawton Energy primarily focused on delivering rooftop solar solutions, but 2024 saw the firm begin to diversify.

In March 2024, Shawton Energy announced it had formed a partnership with EV charger firm RAW Charging, which it declared its exclusive EV charging partner. This partnership aims to expand the appeal of both domestic rooftop solar and EV usage; following the establishment of the partnership, Shawton Energy’s customers will now be able to install solar PV technologies and EV charging simultaneously, streamlining the process of decarbonisation for customers.

Solar installations have been on the rise in Wales of late. At the end of January, the Welsh planning authority awarded planning permission to renewable energy developer Lightrock Power for a 40MW solar PV power plant near Barry, Vale of Glamorgan. According to Lightrock, the development will deliver a 55% biodiversity net gain for the area, thanks to previously established partnerships with wildlife charities including the RSPB and the UK Wild Otter Trust.
