The UK’s Solarcentury is to donate £35,000 to charity SolarAid’s ‘Share a Light’ campaign.
The campaign is aimed at eradicating the use of kerosene for lighting in Africa by 2020, and the donation will go towards the purchase of over 5,800 solar lamps for rural communities.
Kerosene lamps are a severe health hazard, with some estimates suggesting the fumes they produce are a bigger killer in Africa than malaria.
Steve Andrews, chief executive of SolarAid, said: “When a company like Solarcentury makes this type of donation to SolarAid, they help to abolish the crippling dependence many African households have on kerosene. As well as helping directly reduce poverty levels, these donations also provide substantial health and educational benefits to impoverished families.”
