After setting up B&J Saddlery in 1974 Barrie and Lynda Mortlock decided to minimise electricity bills for their showroom by installing a 31.36kWp solar energy system. Contracted by Solarpack and sub-contracted to EES and GB Solar, the solar installation was specially designed for the large structure built in profiled steel.

Caplor Energy has now completed the 49.6kWp solar array, installed on the roof of Greendale Carpets & Floorings’ warehouse, located in Herefordshire. Comprising 260 monocrystalline photovoltaics panels, the installation will generate nearly 42,000 units of renewable electricity and save over 23 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Privately held international home products company, IKEA is in the process of installing 2,600 solar panels on the roof of its Wednesbury, Birmingham branch. Following a £278,600 investment the store now expects to generate around 112,600kWh of electricity per year, reducing the store’s CO2 consumption by over 1,148 tonnes over 25 years. The solar panels will be fully operational by December 2011.

Independent renewable energy project developer TGC Renewables has now completed its 1.7MW Newquay-based solar farm and connected it to the National Grid. The Trevemper Farm scheme will provide renewable energy to the National Grid as well as a regular and regular and reliable income for the landowner and the local community.

Cwmbran-based Ikaros Solar has signed a contract to install 150kW of solar photovoltaics for a poultry farmer near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. Installed over three sites, the solar panels will provide renewable energy for Overbrook Farms’ specialist requirements.

Yorkshire-based companies GMI Renewable Energy Group, Town Centre Securities and Rex Procter & Partners have launched what is thought to be the largest city centre solar photovoltaics installation in the UK. Constructed on the roof of Clarence Dock Car Park in Leeds, the system is expected to supply around 15% of the car park’s electricity.
